Online Business: Setting Goals is the Key to Your Online Business’ Success

You have to set specific goals to ensure the success of your online business. Think about the last time you were successful at something. Were you successful at getting up on time today? You can measure your success according to what time you got up, and you know the reason you succeeded (if you did) is because you set your alarm for that time the night before.

Success always works the same way. You decide on a way to measure success and you develop and implement a sound way to achieve your goal. This is called goal setting, and it is the key to success with anything – including your online business.

Measuring Success and Making Plans

When you think about online business success, what do you think of? There are actually many different types of goals you may have at any given time for your business. You may want to reach a certain sales quota today, and you may hope that eventually your business will be so successful; you will be able to sell it for a terrific profit.

You know that at the end of the day, you will either have achieved or missed your sales goal. If you really want to achieve your sales goal, you will make every effort to do so throughout the day. You’ll provide exceptional customer service, suggest accessory purchases or perhaps offer an extra incentive to entice customers to buy. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Remember this as you set goals for your online business.

What about your long-term goals? When exactly should you start working towards “eventually” selling your business? When will “eventually” be, and how will you know when your business is “successful” enough to be sold for a profit?

If your answer is, you’ll know success when you see it, think again. Do you really expect to achieve a goal you can’t measure without any plan? Do you expect to get up early tomorrow if you don’t decide on an appropriate time tonight and set your alarm clock?

Setting Goals for Success

Most managers and online business owners are good at setting goals, but not others. Usually, talented managers and owners can set and achieve short-term business goals such as daily, weekly and monthly sales quotas. How much better would it be if your short-term business goals were designed to add up to long-term measurable success, too?

If they don’t already do so, spend some time re-evaluating your goals that you have set for this month, this year and the next three years. Take advantage of short-term goals by making them add up to measurable, long-term success.

Another important thing to consider when you are setting online business goals is how reasonable your measure of success is, or how likely you are to be able to develop and implement a plan to achieve your goal. For instance, if you define success as selling $10,000 worth of software this week, but your top sales ever was only $5,000, it’s unlikely you will be able to develop and implement a sound plan to achieve that goal without a significant change in plans.

If you drastically increased your inventory, ran a special promotion or hired a new sales associate as part of your plan, perhaps the $10,000 goal is attainable. Goal setting for online businesses should involve matching success with the plan you develop for achieving it and being realistic about both.

Goal Setting: Beyond “Success”

Do you think there couldn’t be anything better than achieving the goals you set for your online business? There’s actually a lot more to life than achieving your goals on both a personal level and in business. One of the benefits of developing goal-setting strategies for success is the better quality of life you enjoy along the way.

Think back to the alarm clock example and imagine what your life would be like if you never set your alarm and planned to get up on time. Some days you might be on time for work, but other days you’d be very late. Mornings would be chaotic, to say the least and you’re life would be extremely stressful.

By setting goals to achieve success in your online business, you eliminate stress at work (home for you) in much the same way. Your days will become more ordered and you will manage your time more effectively when you are steadily working towards measurable goals. Instead of moving from crises to crises or putting out fires, you will be focused and productive.

Goal setting is the key to success in online business, but it also enhances the quality of your work-life, which in turn, helps you become more productive and efficient. The more productive and efficient you are, the more likely you are to be successful at achieving your goals.
